Over 200 roads remain closed in HP, heavy rain alert issued

The hill state of Himachal Pradesh continues to wrestle with the aftermath of flash floods and landslides with 213 roads still being closed, and the local MeT office issuing a 'yellow alert' for more heavy rainfall in isolated parts of the state till August 19. 

 

Of this, 89 roads were closed in Shimla, 42 in Sirmaur, 37 in Mandi, 26 in Kullu, six in Kangra, five in Chamba, and four each in Kinnaur and Lahaul & Spiti, cites the State Emergency Operation Centre. 

 

Moreover, 218 power and 131 water supply schemes have also been affected. 

 

The region experienced significant rainfall, with Naina Devi recording the highest amount at 96.4 mm, followed by Dharamshala (25 mm), Kandaghat (10.4 mm), and Kahu (9.2 mm) since Monday evening.

 

The state has suffered considerable losses, with 110 fatalities reported in rain-related incidents and economic losses totalling approximately £10.5 million (Rs 1,004 crore) between June 27 and Monday, according to officials.
