At a recent press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar had said a total of 64.2 crore voters had exercise their franchise. 

Basirhat recorded the highest turnout at 76.56 percent, followed by Mathurapur at 74.13 percent, Jaynagar at 73.44 percent, Diamond Harbour at 72.87 percent, Barasat at 71.80 percent, Jadavpur at 70.41 percent, Dum Dum at 67.60 percent, Kolkata Dakshin at 60.88 percent, and Kolkata Uttar at 59.23 percent.

As men from almost every household chase livelihood opportunities afar, the looming shadow of their absence threatens to cast a decisive impact on the elections.

West Bengal recorded the highest voter turnout in the first two hours of polling at 16.54 per cent while Odisha recorded the lowest at 7.43 per cent, according to the Election Commission (EC).

Tamluk recorded the highest polling at 19.07%, followed by Bishnupur (18.56%), Ghatal (18.27%), Bankura (17.69%), Jhargram (16.22%), Kanthi (15.45%), Medinipur (14.58%), and Purulia (12.68%).

In Phase 5 of 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the state had a turnout of 80.1% which is 5.4% more than what it registered on May 20, 2024.

Among the constituencies, Arambag parliamentary seat reported the highest polling percentage at 76.90%, closely followed by Bangaon at 75.73%, and Uluberia at 74.50%. 

There is no democracy without an electorate. However, there is no democracy either if the electorate does not turn up to vote — in large, absolute and impressive numbers. 

A total of 96 seats went to polls in the fourth phase of the seven-phase election. After the latest phase, polling has been completed in 379 seats across 23 states and Union territories.

A voter turnout of 10.81% was recorded in the first two hours of polling in 93 constituencies spread over 11 states and Union Territories in third phase of general elections.

Following the dip in the turnout in the first phase, the EC had directed states to come up with additional set of plans to enhance voter participation.

The highest polling of 14.13 per cent was recorded in Diphu (ST), followed by 9.61 per cent in Karimganj, 9.16 per cent at Darrang-Udalguri, 9.07 per cent in Nagaon and the lowest 5.49 per cent in Silchar, they said.
