The by-election was necessitated after the sitting Aam Aadmi Party legislator Sheetal Angural defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party. It was strange and surprising as to what made Angural desert the ruling party and switch over to the BJP, which has just two MLAs in the Punjab Legislative Assembly.

The by-poll was necessitated after the seat fell vacant following the resignation of Angural, who was previously an AAP legislator, and joined the BJP in March. The poll saw a voter turnout of 54.98%, a significant drop from the 67% recorded in the 2022 state elections.

He switched from AAP to BJP over two months ago and also submitted his resignation from the Assembly, and yesterday, wrote to the Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Sandhwan to withdraw his resignation.
