Ladakh has been in the news recently for demonstrations against the union government's demand for sixth-schedule status, statehood, reservation of jobs, land, and separate statehood.

After the abrogation of Article 370, Ladakh, which shares its border with both Pakistan and China, was carved out as a Union Territory without legislature.

The main points in Namgyal’s agenda include statehood for Ladakh , establishment of a public service commission there and separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil districts as well as exclusive rights over resources in Ladakh for the indigenous people, land rights, and job reservations.

He said the rights guaranteed under Article 370 and 35-A were snatched when the erstwhile state was bifurcated into two union territories.

The lone Ladakh Lok Sabha seat has Leh, a Buddhist-dominated district with 88,877 voters and Kargil, with 95,926 voters who are predominantly Shia Muslim.  

In Ladakh's lone Lok Sabha constituency, the situation has evolved into a clash between Buddhist-dominated Leh and Muslim-majority Kargil.

The entire rank and file of the National Conference in the Kargil district of the union territory of Ladakh have “rebelled” against the party leadership’s decision to concede the Ladakh parliamentary constituency to the Congress for the ongoing General Elections.

In Ladakh's political arena, BJP's incumbent MP, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, reaffirmed his allegiance to the party by extending support to candidate Tashi Gyalson, following internal disagreements.

Tsering Namgyal, the Leader of the Opposition in LAHDC, Leh, was declared the Congress's candidate for the Lok Sabha election from Ladakh late Wednesday, according to former minister and senior Congress leader Rigzin Jora.
