Gupta, 53, also known as Nick, was arrested and detained in the Czech Republic on June 30, 2023, at the request of the US government on charges of being involved in a plot to assassinate Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York. He was extradited to the US on June 14.

According to an official statement, Canadian authorities detained a fourth Indian national, twenty-two-year-old Amardeep Singh, from Brampton, Surrey, and Abbotsford regions, charging him with first-degree murder and conspiracy in the assassination of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

India rejected the claims, saying that the report made “unwarranted and unsubstantiated” imputations on a serious matter and that an investigation into the case was underway.
