The government is in talks with the JeI's highest decision-making body, the Shoora, which has formed a panel to discuss the group's participation in elections and other issues.

‘The BJP applauds the decision made by Jamaat-e-Islami J&K yesterday. It is a good step,’ senior party leader Sunil Sharma told a media gathering at Srinagar on Thursday.

The Ministry of Home Affairs banned the organisation in February 2019 after revoking Article 370 from the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. The official statement issued by the MHA read that the organisation was indulged in "anti-national activities, and was thus banned for five years.

This decision comes after the Union government imposed a five-year ban on the Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir, citing concerns about activities that could undermine internal security and public order, potentially jeopardising the unity and integrity of the nation. Subsequently, the ban was extended for another five years.
