A Canadian Member of Parliament from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party has criticised the decision to mark the first anniversary of the death of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar with a moment of silence in the House of Commons. Chandra Arya, an MP from Napean, Canada, expressed his disapproval, stating that the tribute was inappropriate.

Indian national Nikhil Gupta was extradited to the United States on June 14 to face legal proceedings. However, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has not received any request for consular access from Gupta. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed this during a weekly briefing on Friday.

According to an official statement, Canadian authorities detained a fourth Indian national, twenty-two-year-old Amardeep Singh, from Brampton, Surrey, and Abbotsford regions, charging him with first-degree murder and conspiracy in the assassination of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The accused, Karan Brar, stated in a 2019 online video that he had applied for a student visa with EthicWorks Immigration Services in Bathinda, Punjab, India.

Karan Brar, 22, Kamalpreet Singh, 22, and Karanpreet Singh, 28, all Indian nationals residing in Edmonton, were arrested and charged on Friday with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

During an interaction with senior journalists in Bhubaneswar, Jaishankar dismissed Canada's actions as driven by internal politics. He criticized Canada for accusing India without substantial evidence, highlighting the need for restraint and evidence-based accusations in international relations.

Nijjar, a 45-year-old Canadian citizen, was shot dead outside his gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, in June 2023.

Nijjar, who had been labelled a terrorist by India, was assassinated in an incident that had escalated into a significant diplomatic confrontation between Canada and India.
