Gambhir, urged the team to keep working on improving collectively on turning tracks which posed a different challenge to the batting group in particular.

With the first T20I scheduled against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on Saturday, the newly formed coach-captain partnership aims to build upon India's recent World Cup triumph while navigating through a transitional phase.

"Obviously, player management becomes the key as a coach. So it'll be interesting to see how he goes. I think he's got the tools, he's got the goods for the job and he's got the experience."

Contrary to speculations about their absence in the upcoming Sri Lanka tour, both players have been included in India's squad for the three ODIs next month.

Sharma is, reportedly, set to be back as captain for the 50-overs format, ruling out the possibility of another captaincy debate between KL Rahul and Shubman Gill.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah expressed his enthusiasm for Gambhir’s new role in a post on his X account.

Following the T20 World Cup, India is scheduled for a five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe in July, during which senior players are expected to be rested. According to recent reports, Gambhir will not be traveling with the team to Zimbabwe.

The discussion, it is believed, was focussed on the roadmap he has in mind for the next three years, which will feature three ICC tournaments across formats.

The deadline to apply for the head coach’s role was May 27 but it is still not clear if Gambhir has submitted his application.

The former BCCI President said he is in favour of the national team having an Indian coach since there is enough talent in the country.  

Notably, no prominent foreign names have applied for the post, especially after BCCI secretary Jay Shah emphasised the board's preference for a candidate familiar with the domestic structure and who has risen through the ranks.
