There was panic in north Delhi early on Monday morning as a leopard strayed into a village in North Delhi's Wazirabad and injured five persons.

The animal was rescued later by forest department officials, Delhi fire service chief Atul Garg said.

Even as two fire tenders reached the spot some locals managed to help the firemen lock the animal in a room after it ran into a house.

The leopard was first spotted around 4.30 am and a PCR call was made at 5.15 am. It tried to attack over a dozen people and injured some of them, said a village resident whose name has not been revealed.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (north) M K Meena said police too reached the spot after an SOS and forest department officials were informed.

Police said three of the five persons who were injured have been identified as Mahender, Akash and Rampal.

Seven personnel of the forest department, a team from the Delhi Fire Department along with the local police were present at the spot, the DCP said.
