Touts charge ₹10k-20k for illegal entry to India: HANM

The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) has raised serious allegations regarding the illegal entry of Bangladeshi immigrants into Meghalaya.

 

On Thursday, HANM president Lamphrang Kharbani and his team met with Meghalaya DGP I Nongrang, claiming that touts in the state are charging Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 per person to facilitate the entry of these immigrants through damaged or unfenced portions of the border.

 

Kharbani stressed on the need for immediate intervention to prevent this illegal activity going on in the bordering state. 

 

According to him, around 20% of the international border in Meghalaya remains unfenced, primarily due to the challenging terrain, rivers, and wildlife migration corridors.

 

A senior official from the home department acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, "There are serious concerns over the illegal entry of Bangladeshi nationals, and the government will leave no stone unturned to stop these activities."

 

The official also mentioned that the matter has been escalated to the Border Security Force (BSF) for coordinated action.

 

With ongoing violence in Bangladesh, pro-Inner Line Permit (ILP) activists in Meghalaya have heightened their vigilance, urging members to monitor and check for the infiltration of Bangladeshi nationals.
