A recent initiative by Aaranyak, a premier research-driven non-profit biodiversity conservation organisation, aimed at sensitising Border Security Force (BSF) personnel on the Indo-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya's Garo Hills region has been hailed as a significant step toward improving human-wildlife coexistence.

The crowd, allegedly comprising mostly Bangladeshi Hindus, assembled some 400 metres away from the fence alongside a water body at the Genduguri and Doikhawa villages in the Lalmonirhat district of Bangladesh.

Her departure marks the end of her 15-year tenure, which has been marred by escalating unrest and violence, including protests that have claimed over 300 lives.

Hasina, accompanied by her sister, departed Dhaka earlier in the day, first heading to a Bangladesh Air Force base in Kurmitola before leaving for Agartala.

The BSF highlighted the significance of their action in a statement released on Tuesday, asserting that it was instrumental in thwarting illegal activities and safeguarding the security of the border area.

The operations, conducted between June and July, highlight ongoing concerns about illegal border crossings from Bangladesh into India.

The urgency of this redeployment stems from recent terrorist activities in Jammu. The BSF units, previously engaged in anti-Naxal operations, will now serve as a critical "second line" of defence.

On Sunday, the movement of cargo trucks via land ports ceased completely, officials confirmed, citing the non-functional status of the Bangladeshi side of the Petrapole land port.

On Thursday, HANM president Lamphrang Kharbani and his team met with Meghalaya DGP I Nongrang, claiming that touts in the state are charging Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 per person to facilitate the entry of these immigrants through damaged or unfenced portions of the border.

In a significant operation on Tuesday, the Border Security Force (BSF) and Punjab Police successfully dismantled a cross-border smuggling racket dealing in illegal weapons and drugs. This joint effort led to the arrest of one individual and the seizure of a substantial quantity of heroin and arms.

The incident came to light when a woman filed a molestation complaint at Uluberia Police Station on Sunday evening.
