Doc's murder case: Cal HC orders CBI probe

The Calcutta High Court.

The Calcutta High Court has ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the tragic case involving the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College Hospital.

The incident, which occurred last Friday, shocked the community, leading to widespread calls for a thorough investigation.

The court's decision to involve the CBI came after it questioned the West Bengal government's initial handling of the case, particularly why a murder case was not immediately registered, and instead, an unnatural death case was initiated.

The court expressed concerns over the lapses in the hospital's response and the administration's failure to file the case promptly.

The high court also urged agitating doctors in the state to call off their ceasework, saying they have a “pious obligation”.

In response to the high court's directive, all relevant documents and evidence will be handed over to the CBI for further investigation.

A civic volunteer was arrested in connection with the case on Saturday, but the involvement of the CBI is expected to bring more clarity and accountability to the investigation.

The victim's parents, along with others who filed Public Interest Litigations (PILs), sought a court-monitored probe, which has now been granted by the high court.

The case has drawn significant attention and has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of medical professionals in the region.
