Jailed Amritpal to take oath as Lok Sabha MP on July 5

Earlier, the Punjab government forwarded a written request of Singh, to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, seeking temporary release or parole for him to take oath. The request was sent under Section 15 of the NSA, which allows for temporary release without conditions or with specified conditions.

As quoted by sources, pro-Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh, who is detained under the National Security Act (NSA) in Dibrugarh jail, Assam, will be airlifted to Delhi to take oath as a Member of Parliament on July 5. He will then be brought back to Dibrugarh Jail.

 

Meanwhile, Faridkot MP Sarabjit Singh Khalsa met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at his residence in Delhi, today, and conveyed this information. All the formalities for the same have been completed.

Amritpal's legal adviser, Imaan Singh Khara confirmed that the plea was sent through the jail superintendent on June 9. The Punjab home secretary has forwarded the letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker, who will decide on oath-taking within 60 days, starting June 25, after consulting the home department.

 

Three of Amritpal's aides, also detained under NSA, have announced their intention to contest assembly by-elections from Punjab's Barnala, Gidderbaha, and Dera Baba Nanak.

 

Background:

 

Amritpal Singh, a radical Sikh leader, won the Lok Sabha polls from Khadoor Sahib despite being detained under the NSA. His temporary release or parole is being sought to enable him to take oath as a Member of Parliament.
