Novak ends 16 year wait, clinches Gold medal at Olympics

Novak Djokovic ended his 16-year-long wait and clinched a Gold medal in the men’s single against Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros, Paris on Sunday.

 

In a hard-fought, two-hour and fifty-minute-long tennis match, Djokovic won two sets straight against Alcaraz, 7-6 (3) and 7-6 (2). 

 

In a neck-neck match and a total of five break points in the first set, Djokovic enthralled a sweltering audience to reverse the line of deuces and won the first set by breaking the tie point at 7-6(3). Djokovic who has a total of 24 Grand slams to his pocket, and now an Olympic Gold medal has completed his medal window. 

 

Alcaraz entered the finals by winning against Felix Auger Aliassime by 6-1, 6-1 in a total of 70 minutes, however, in today's match he had lost his first set in the same time. 

 

A much more aggressive player than Djokovic, the 21-year-old had won the French Open 2024 on the same court. And, won his fourth Wimbledon title against Djokovic for two straight years 2023 and 2024. 

 

For Djokovic, though it was a necessary win for his country.
