A reform of the UN Security Council that does not address the lack of representation, particularly in the permanent category, would only "exacerbate" the current imbalances in its composition and render it "ill-equipped" to address current global challenges, India has said on behalf of the G4 countries.

The United Nations Security Council has recently approved a US-drafted proposal calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. This action comes amid ongoing tensions in the region due to the Israel-Hamas conflict, which has now lasted for eight months.

Dhankhar, in his address, reaffirmed India’s status as a democratic nation with an unwavering judicial system that cannot be undermined by external pressures.

The Security Council on Monday held an important meeting to vote on the resolution, which called for a cease-fire throughout the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Ruchira Kamboj, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, posed pointed questions during a UN General Assembly plenary meeting commemorating the two-year mark since the conflict's onset on February 24, 2022.

Ambassador Francis, who is on a five-day visit to India, also strongly underlined the need for reform of the UN Security Council (UNSC). 

"The ongoing conflict is also impacting the safety of maritime commercial traffic in the Indian Ocean, including some attacks in the vicinity of India," R Ravindra, the Deputy Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations said in his remarks during a UNSC Open Debate on the Middle East.

The remarks by Tesla CEO came after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres raised concerns about the absence of any African nation from the list of permanent members of the UNSC.
