Members of the transgender community from various parts of India will attend Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi's oath ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday.

"Our community probably has the highest voting percentage, nearly 99%. We take our responsibility very seriously. You don't get to see that because most of our votes are counted as male. But trust me, we are all aware that voting is a powerful opportunity for us," said Kumbar, pulling out the voter identity card that establishes her as male. 

The 2011 census recorded Maharashtra's transgender population at 40,891, underscoring the necessity for inclusive policies. The 28-page policy prioritizes equal rights, proposing a Transgender Protection Cell and designated police officers to address transgender-related cases.

Belonging to one of the country's most marginalised communities, a majority of transgender people are hesitant to join politics. However, politicians like Meera Parida, Bobbi Kinnar and Chandramukhi Muvvala among others are bucking the trend to fight for the rights of the community.
