Opinions are divided about the reasons behind the relatively high turnout. It is actually the highest turnout since the militancy erupted in Jammu and Kashmir. 

Data implies that the Kashmiris' trust in the democratic system could be finally reviving after a three-decade absence marked by savage terror cycles.

Despite speculations about the boycott, people in Kashmir voted in record numbers, with a 38% voter turnout in the fourth phase of the LS polls.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the total turnout for the seat was around 14.43 per cent compared to 25.86% in 2014.

Srinagar will go to the polls on May 13, followed by Baramulla on May 20 and the Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary seat on the rescheduled date of May 25.

"These polling stations have been equipped with wheelchairs, ramps, braille script, and other features to infuse confidence into differently-abled to make the voting process a smooth activity for them. The idea is to instill confidence among the section and encourage them to vote wherever they are besides increasing sensitisation about their issues," the DEO said. 

"As many as 52,100 Kashmiri migrants will exercise their right to franchise from Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency on May 13. Of these, 25,760 are male voters and 26,340 are female voters," Assistant Returning Officer (ARO), Migrants, Riaz Ahmed told here.
