The Indian Army has established two of the world's highest tank repair facilities near the China border in Eastern Ladakh, where over 500 tanks and infantry combat vehicles are deployed amidst the ongoing stand-off with China.

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk said they had abandoned their planned march to the Chinese border to support shepherds in the area due to "non-cooperation" of local authorities.

About 20 protesters will go up to Changthang near the Chinese border if the authorities did not stop them, the climate activist said.

Nine rounds of talks have taken place and failed between the governments and local leaders. The Centre has agreed to look into all the concerns except the demand for Statehood and inclusion into the Sixth Schedule, which is primal to who will run Ladakh.

The coalition, spearheading the "People for Himalaya" campaign, advocates for referendums and public consultations to become obligatory for all development projects. 

The activist ended his 21-day-long hunger strike in support of the demand for statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution on Tuesday evening.

Throughout his fast, Wangchuk was accompanied by hundreds of supporters in Leh, where he slept outdoors. He also urged the public to exercise their voting rights responsibly for the benefit of the nation.

Raj, a vocal critic of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, extended his support to the Wangchuk-led protest and said when the governments do not keep their promises, the people have no option but to unite and raise their voice in accordance with their constitutional rights.

Talking to reporters after meeting Wangchuk at the protest site, Raj said “We have heard from the people and the scientists that they have been promised (sixth schedule by BJP) and when we remind them (of their promise) they are seeing them as criminals”.

Sonam Wangchuk, renowned for his environmental advocacy, spoke out against what he perceives as the Indian government's failure to uphold promises made to Ladakh's residents, particularly regarding safeguards under the Constitution's Sixth Schedule.

He highlights a U-turn in government commitments and environmental concerns, advocating for Ladakhi voices to be heard. The 21-day duration mirrors Gandhi's strategy to attract attention.
