Engineers from the Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army undertook the rapid construction effort amid challenging conditions to restore crucial connectivity severed by incessant rains, the force announced.

Over the last three days, a total of 1,447 stranded tourists have been successfully evacuated. On Tuesday alone, 1,225 tourists were rescued, followed by 64 on Monday.

Nine tourists have been evacuated so far, led by District Magistrate Hem Kumar Chettri and officials from Tourism, Civil Aviation, and Forest Departments, along with the Travel Agent Association of Sikkim (TAAS).

The severe weather, which began on Thursday, has caused extensive damage to roads and bridges, leaving many areas inaccessible and tourists marooned.

The lifeline connecting North Sikkim to Kalimpong in West Bengal, National Highway 10, has been completely cut off due to landslides.
