According to chairperson Sinha, five people died in the incident, however, some local reports attributed to railway officials suggested the toll could be as high as 15.

Rescue operations are currently underway at the location, which is situated approximately 30 km from North Bengal's New Jalpaiguri station.

The service, which operates between Sealdah in West Bengal and Tripura's Agartala, was particularly crowded due to the peak tourist season.
