Located near National Highway 44 and bordering Haryana, Shambhu first gained national attention in 2020 when farmers protesting against three central farm laws broke through barricades at the Shambhu border to march towards Delhi. 

A division bench comprising Justices Sudhir Singh and Harsh Bunger had reserved its verdict on a plea seeking directions to set aside the notification on Tuesday. 

The petitioner, Uday Partap Singh, hailing from Panchkula, has urged the court to intervene against what he termed as "obstructive" actions by the governments of Haryana, Punjab, and the Centre.

The Congress and AAP held a protest here and a police complaint was also filed on behalf of their joint mayoral candidate and AAP councillor Kuldeep Kumar against the presiding officer, accusing him of tampering with ballot papers in the Tuesday election to favour the BJP which retained all three seats.

The petition was filed by AAP councillor Kuldeep Kumar, who was the candidate for the mayor post, according to party sources.

The court reportedly orally asked the administration to propose a new date for the mayoral elections, preferably between January 23 and January 26.
