Shehbaz Shareef accepted that the country was reduced to its knees, owing to an unstable economy. Shareef said that his term would start while the government is suffering a fiscal deficit of more than one trillion rupees.

The success in combating extreme poverty is attributed to the government's robust policies on redistribution, fostering inclusive growth throughout the past decade. The latest official consumption expenditure data for 2022-23 underscores this progress, offering the first survey-based poverty estimates in over a decade.

India's strides in poverty alleviation have reached a significant milestone, with the poverty rate falling below 5%, according to B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, the CEO of NITI Aayog. The latest household consumer expenditure survey conducted by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) indicates a notable improvement in living standards across both rural and urban areas of the country.

“See the figure of 1.3 lakh houses. Even when I attended a national-level programme for giving houses under PMAY, I did not see such a huge figure. I congratulate the Gujarat government. For any poor person, having his own house is a guarantee of his better future,” the prime minister said.

According to the NITI discussion paper, multidimensional poverty in India declined from 29.17 per cent in 2013-14 to 11.28 per cent in 2022-23, with about 24.82 crore people moving out of this bracket during this period.
