The magnitude-7.6 quake struck off the Noto Peninsula, causing significant damage in Suzu and triggering fires in Wajima City. Roads were torn apart, complicating search and rescue operations.

Kishida emphasized the urgency of swift rescue efforts during an emergency disaster meeting, stating, "We must rescue them as quickly as possible, especially those who are trapped under collapsed structures."

Eight people were confirmed dead in Wajima city, officials said. Seven others were seriously injured, while damage to homes was so great that it could not immediately be assessed, they said.

The recent earthquake is the most lethal one the country has ever experienced, with a focal length of 10 kilometres. According to a state broadcaster, at least 500 temporary housing units were built for Meipo residents whereas thousands of people have been shifted to safety shelters. 

Relief operations persisted in the rain-battered coastal district of Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu. On Saturday, a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team, in collaboration with the police, successfully rescued individuals stranded in the SIPCOT industrial area.
