This vulnerability to cyclones is nothing new for the Bay of Bengal, which holds the dubious distinction of being one of the most cyclone-prone regions globally.

In a bold stance against the Centre's decision, the Mizoram Assembly has adopted a resolution opposing the proposed fencing of the India-Myanmar border and the scrapping of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) with Myanmar.

“They were extended makeshift refuge on humanitarian grounds as they crossed the border to save their lives. But no more intrusion will be allowed in future,” paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) chief Major General Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui told newspersons at the repatriation site.

The memorandum claimed that the FMR has been a crucial mechanism in maintaining ethnic and cultural linkages between the Mizo people residing on both sides of the border and the proposed abolition of the FMR and border fencing will have a detrimental effect on the vital ethnic and cultural connections between the Mizo communities. 

Mahmud emphasised Bangladesh's "zero tolerance" policy towards terrorism and discussed key issues including defence cooperation and the Teesta river water dispute during his visit to India.

As the Ministry of External Affairs is currently in the process of scrapping it, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has recommended the immediate suspension of FMR, Shah said.

The small plane had arrived here to take back the Myanmarese soldiers who crossed over to India last week, following gunfights with an ethnic insurgent group, they said. There were 14 people on the plane and eight of them were injured in the accident, which happened around 10.20 am, officials said.

The Free Movement Regime currently enables residents on both sides of the border to travel 16 km into each other's territory without a visa.
