FSSAI examined over 300 samples of spices from other brands, all of which tested negative for ethylene oxide presence. In response to the issue, the Spice Board issued guidelines to spice exporters regarding the use of ethylene oxide as a fumigant to sterilize spices, ensuring compliance with the importing countries' standards for microbial contamination control.

The Center for Food Safety (CFS) in Hong Kong had advised consumers not to purchase certain spice mix products of MDH and Everest, citing the presence of ethylene oxide beyond the permissible limit.

The banned products include Madras Curry Powder, Sambhar Mixed Masala Powder, Mixed Masala Curry Powder by MDH, and Fish Curry Masala by Everest.

India has taken steps to prevent ethylene oxide (EtO) contamination in its spice exports, following recalls of MDH and Everest spices in Singapore and Hong Kong due to EtO residues. Measures include mandatory testing of consignments to these countries, inspections of processing facilities, and sample testing by a techno-scientific committee.
