The recent parliamentary elections in the Maldives have delivered a resounding victory for the People's National Congress (PNC), led by President Mohamed Muizzu.

In response to the expression of gratitude from Maldivian minister Moosa Zameer towards India for renewing the quota to import essential commodities for the fiscal years 2024-2025, Union Minister S Jaishankar reiterated India's steadfast commitment to its policies of 'neighbourhood first' and SAGAR.

The country's main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which holds a majority in Parliament, last month wanted to submit a motion to impeach President Muizzu.

Among those deported, Bangladesh accounted for the largest number with 83 individuals, followed by 43 Indians, 25 Sri Lankans, and 8 Nepalis. 

Despite his address to the People’s Majlis, only 24 lawmakers attended, as the top two Opposition parties boycotted the session due to their disagreement with Muizzu's anti-India stance, holding a majority in the House.

Per the Maldivian Constitution, the President is mandated to address the parliament in the first session annually, presenting the state of the nation and recommendations for addressing various issues.n

The meet follows the initial meeting of the High-Level Core Group held in Male on January 14, wherein the framework for ongoing evacuation and humanitarian operations in the Maldives was outlined.

Former Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih characterized the assault as "politically motivated," leading Home Minister Ali Ihusan to request him to provide evidence supporting his assertion.

The main opposition MDP, which holds a majority in the Maldivian Parliament, is planning to submit a motion to impeach President Mohamed Muizzu even as three members of his cabinet were denied approval during a parliamentary vote on Monday.

Amidst the chaos, a physical altercation broke out between Kanditheemu MP Abdulla Shaheem Abdul Hakeem Shaheem and Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa.
