External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated a significant water and sanitation project in the Maldives on Saturday, funded by India. The project, valued at USD 110 million, covers 28 islands and aims to improve access to clean water and sanitation facilities.

This visit comes nearly a year after his last trip to the Maldives in January 2023 and is aimed at further strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

India has replaced some 80 soldiers in the Maldives with civilians after a demand by President Mohamed Muizzu who has pivoted the archipelago’s ties towards China, New Delhi officials said on Thursday.

Zameer's arrival today coincided with the scheduled completion of the Indian troop withdrawal on May 10, a key campaign promise of the current Maldivian government led by President Mohamed Muizzu.

It was reported that the individuals with serious injuries were promptly transported to Hulhumale Hospital for medical attention. 

During his presidential campaign, Muizzu's platform included the slogan "India out," criticizing his predecessor for allegedly conceding too much to Indian influence and compromising national sovereignty.
