Preliminary investigations suggest that a land dispute between Kumar and his brother may have led to the incident. Father of the accused survived the attack and currently is in hospital.

The victims, Avtar Singh (58) and his son Harmeet Singh (28), were attacked while irrigating a field they had leased from Hardeep Kaur of Chuhar village, Ludhiana.
