The June 17 incident in West Bengal's Darjeeling district, which resulted in the loss of 10 lives including the loco pilot of the goods train, has been described by the CRS as an "accident waiting to happen."

Eight bodies were initially brought to the state-run NBMCH following the accident, and two more individuals succumbed to their injuries during treatment.

The initial findings of the Kanchanjunga Express accident in West Bengal indicate that the goods train breached the speed restrictions set for the section due to a "defective" automatic signalling system.
