Eight bodies were initially brought to the state-run NBMCH following the accident, and two more individuals succumbed to their injuries during treatment.

Putting an end to the ordeal of passengers travelling in Kanchanjunga Express, the unimpaired coaches reach its destination, that is, Sealdah railway station on Tuesday.

The initial findings of the Kanchanjunga Express accident in West Bengal indicate that the goods train breached the speed restrictions set for the section due to a "defective" automatic signalling system.

According to Railway Board Chairperson Jaya Varma Sinha, the collision happened because a goods train disregarded the signal and hit the Kanchanjunga Express, which was on its way to Sealdah from Agartala.

According to chairperson Sinha, five people died in the incident, however, some local reports attributed to railway officials suggested the toll could be as high as 15.

At least 15 passengers lost their lives and 60 others sustained injuries when a goods train collided with the stationary Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express near New Jalpaiguri station in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district on Monday morning. 

Rescue operations are currently underway at the location, which is situated approximately 30 km from North Bengal's New Jalpaiguri station.
