Dhananjay, originally from Gaya, Bihar, became the first Dalit president from the Left since Batti Lal Bairwa, who was elected in 1996-97.

Polling for the first phase has commenced which will continue till 1 pm. The second phase will be conducted from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm. The counting will commence 9 pm onwards and the results will be declared on Sunday.

The atmosphere was charged with the sound of ‘dhols’ and trumpets as students and supporters of different outfits cheered for their leaders and raised slogans before the debate began.
