The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA determined that the spacecraft landed about 55 meters (60 yards) away from it's target, in between two craters near the Shioli crater, a region covered in volcanic rock.

JAXA asserts that it’s high-precision technology will become a powerful tool in future exploration of hilly moon poles, seen as a potential source of oxygen, fuel and water. Japan also plans a joint unmanned lunar polar exploration with India in 2025.

If the mission succeeds, Japan will be placed as the only fifth country to soft-land a robotic craft on the natural satellite
