A recent research paper co-authored by economist Thomas Piketty has proposed imposing a 2 per cent tax on net wealth exceeding Rs 10 crore and a 33 per cent inheritance tax in India. Titled 'Proposals For a Wealth Tax Package to Tackle Extreme Inequalities in India,' the paper suggests this tax package to address the growing wealth disparity in the country.

Engaging in debates over such policies not only encourages capital flight abroad but also unjustly penalizes the hard work and aspirations of the middle class that are striving to build wealth.

Pitroda had spoken about inheritance tax in the US while delving into the issue of redistribution of health. As the BJP latched on it to target the Congress, the latter first distanced now trying to defend the leader.
