The families in question arrived in India between 1990 and 1998 on visitor visas, primarily from Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan districts of Pakistan.

The Union Home Secretary handed over the certificates to the 14 people after their applications were processed online through a designated portal.

"The Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (CAA) is an internal matter of India and is in keeping with India's inclusive traditions and our long-standing commitment to human rights," Jaiswal said.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday claimed that the CAA is completely insignificant in Assam, from where there will be the “least number of applications” for Indian citizenship.
