Located near National Highway 44 and bordering Haryana, Shambhu first gained national attention in 2020 when farmers protesting against three central farm laws broke through barricades at the Shambhu border to march towards Delhi. 

The petitioner, Uday Partap Singh, hailing from Panchkula, has urged the court to intervene against what he termed as "obstructive" actions by the governments of Haryana, Punjab, and the Centre.

Led by Sunny Ahluwalia, the AAP councillors demanded action against the presiding officer for purportedly tampering with ballot papers in the mayoral polls. 

The case, brought forward by senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi on behalf of councillor Kuldeep Kumar, is set to be heard by a bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.

The petition, filed by AAP councillor Kuldeep Kumar, who contested for the mayoral post, targets the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and the Union Territory administration, among others. 

The court reportedly orally asked the administration to propose a new date for the mayoral elections, preferably between January 23 and January 26.
