In November 2023, US federal prosecutors had charged Indian national Nikhil Gupta of working with an Indian government employee in the foiled plot to kill Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York.

He made his first appearance in Manhattan federal court before Magistrate Judge James Cott on Monday afternoon for his arraignment and pleaded not guilty. Gupta's attorney Jeffrey Chabrowe entered the "not guilty" plea on his behalf. Gupta is being held in a Brooklyn detention facility.

Indian national Nikhil Gupta, accused in the plot to murder Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, has been extradited to the United States from the Czech Republic.

The Washington Post, citing unnamed sources, had recently named a Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer in connection with the alleged plot to kill Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on American soil last year.

Report (of US media house) in question makes unwarranted and unsubstantiated imputations on a serious matter, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has said
