This spike in tomato prices, along with significant increases in the cost of onions and potatoes, has led to a 10% year-on-year rise in the cost of a home-cooked vegetarian thali, according to a report by Crisil.

The report highlighted that the cost of a vegetarian thali, which includes roti, vegetables (onions, tomatoes, and potatoes), rice, dal, curd, and salad, rose to Rs 29.4 per plate in June. This marks an increase from Rs 26.7 in the same period last year and from Rs 27.8 in May 2024.

"After a better-than-expected 7.6% this fiscal, India's real GDP growth will likely moderate to 6.8% in fiscal 2025," said the Crisil India Outlook report. It said that the next seven fiscals (2025-2031) will see the Indian economy crossing the $5 trillion-mark and inching closer to $7 trillion.  

The Roti Rice Rate (RRR) report, compiled by Crisil, highlights that the cost of a vegetarian thali, comprising roti, onion, tomato, potato, rice, dal, curd, and salad, rose to Rs 28 in January 2024 from Rs 26.60 in the same period last year.
