The Union Home Ministry confirmed Das's citizenship on August 13, 2024, at 3:41 PM, marking a significant milestone in the implementation of the act.

The families in question arrived in India between 1990 and 1998 on visitor visas, primarily from Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan districts of Pakistan.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah termed it a "historic day", saying the decades-long wait of those who faced religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan is over.

India defends the CAA, asserting it's about granting citizenship, not taking it away, and emphasizes its internal matter. However, USCIRF contends that if the law were truly about protecting persecuted religious minorities, it would include Rohingya Muslims from Burma and others.

During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, requested four weeks to submit a reply to the 20 applications filed.

Roy's statement included the suggestion that Hindu, Buddhist, or Christian refugees should be presumed eligible for citizenship. He further proposed that a male's religious status could be determined through a circumcision test, and females accompanying such males would be presumed eligible for citizenship.

It was learnt that CM Banerjee will attend an administrative review meeting and lead the anti-CAA rally on Wednesday to protest against the Central government’s recent move. However, CM Banerjee will return to Kolkata after addressing just the administrative meeting.

“The Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024 under the CAA-2019 have been notified. A new portal has been launched, persons eligible under CAA-2019 can apply for citizenship on this portal indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in,” an official spokesperson said.

"After seeking nine extensions for the notification of the rules, the timing right before the elections is evidently designed to polarise the elections, especially in West Bengal and Assam," the Congress leader said. 

With the CAA rules being issued, the Modi government will now start granting Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim migrants -- Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians -- from the three countries.

In a recent development, a Delhi court has discharged 11 accused individuals in connection with a 2020 northeast Delhi riots case. Additional Sessions Judge Pulastya Pramachala presided over the case and stated that there was no substantial evidence to suggest the accused had committed the alleged offences.
