The call comes in the wake of escalating threats and physical assaults targeting members of the press.

The film stars acclaimed Bangladeshi actor Chanchal Chowdhury in the lead role.

It expressed regret at the death of several hundred people in violent protests in the neighbouring nation.

Bangladesh is India’s biggest trade partner in South Asia, while India is the second biggest trade partner of the neighbouring country in Asia.

Nasreen has been living in exile since 1994 after she faced criticism from Islamist fundamentalists for her writings on communalism and women’s equality in Bangladesh.

"I am directing the armed forces to take stern measures to protect the lives and properties of the people and state assets. I call upon all to come forward to ensure communal harmony, security of minorities and protect government property," he said. 

Bangladesh Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman announced in Dhaka that an interim government would be formed, including representatives from all political parties. 

The turmoil stems from student protests demanding the Sheikh Hasina-led government to abolish a controversial job quota system.

The neighbouring country has sent an official note to New Delhi regarding the matter.
