In the midst of political jousting ahead of the upcoming Parliamentary elections, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's utilisation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as a strategic tool to appeal to a specific minority community has been met with sharp criticism from AICC general secretary K C Venugopal.

The Left party called for the defeat of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to save secular democracy.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) unveiled its manifesto for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections on Thursday, highlighting key promises and commitments if the party comes to power.

The distressing incident unfolded subsequent to an anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rally, spearheaded by the Khasi Students' Union (KSU) and other prominent NGOs in Ichamati, as confirmed by police sources. 

India implemented the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 last week, paving the way for granting citizenship to undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014.

During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, requested four weeks to submit a reply to the 20 applications filed.

The dispute, stemming from disagreements over access to the venue, quickly escalated into a physical altercation, casting a shadow over the university campus.

"The Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (CAA) is an internal matter of India and is in keeping with India's inclusive traditions and our long-standing commitment to human rights," Jaiswal said.

In the wake of protests by refugees from Pakistan and Afghanistan against the Congress over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) Rules 2024, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has launched a blistering attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of prioritizing its vote bank interests over the welfare of the nation.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, disclosed that there are 237 pending petitions, four of which involve interim applications contesting the enforcement of the rules.
