The Delhi High Court has dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the Centre's decision to observe June 25 as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas,' a day marking the imposition of Emergency by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975. The court found no violation or disrespect of the Constitution in the government's notification.

On June 25, the Indian government will observe what it now calls 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas,' translating to 'Constitution Killing Day,' marking a significant shift in how the Emergency period of 1975 is remembered. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced this decision, emphasising a renewed focus on the controversial period in Indian history when the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency.

Congress MP KC Venugopal has raised a significant concern regarding a recent statement made by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. In a letter addressed to the Speaker, Venugopal expressed his shock and disappointment over remarks made about the Emergency imposed in June 1975, calling it a grave matter that affects the credibility of Parliament.

Shortly after the Supreme Court granted a conditional stay on the Allahabad High Court's verdict nullifying Indira's election to the Lok Sabha, the decision of emergency was announced via All India Radio.
