Around 1,500 families in Assam's Morigaon district have been asked to vacate forest and railway land, officials said on Monday.

District Commissioner Devashish Sarma stated that approximately 10,000 people had settled illegally on government land in Silbhanga village, Jagiroad.

"A notice was served to the residents on June 12, giving them ten days to clear the land. Most of them have complied," Sarma informed mediapersons.

The eviction notice, however, has been met with requests for more time from families with children appearing for exams.

"As a humanitarian gesture, we have decided to make arrangements for their stay until the exams are over," Sarma added.

The district administration is focused on ensuring the clearance without force or demolition of structures.

"We have engaged in discussions with the residents, and nearly 80 per cent have already begun moving their belongings," Sarma said.

He visited the area to oversee the operation and ensure no untoward incidents occurred. Security forces have been deployed to maintain order.

"We are hopeful that the remaining families will peacefully clear the area," the district commissioner concluded.
