The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday postponed the hearing on a plea challenging the authorisation of Hindu prayers in the cellar of the Gyanvapi mosque to February 12.

The Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee, overseeing the mosque near Varanasi's Kashi Vishwanath temple, filed the petition last Friday opposing a Varanasi court's decision allowing prayers in the southern cellar.

However, despite the committee's appeal, the Allahabad High Court did not grant immediate relief.

The dispute over religious practices at the historic site continues to draw attention amid ongoing legal proceedings.

The Varanasi District Court had earlier on 31 January permitted the Hindu faction to conduct prayers at 10 sealed cellars within the premises of the Gyanvapi Mosque.

The court's decision followed the discovery of multiple Hindu idols in the mosque's basement.
