One dead, 40 injured as severe turbulence hits Singapore Airlines flight

One person died and around 40 were injured as a Singapore Airlines flight headed for Singapore from London had to make an emergency landing in Bangkok, Thailand, on Tuesday after being hit by severe turbulence caused by an air pocket.

 

There were "injuries and one fatality on board the Boeing 777-300ER," the airline posted on X, offering condolences to the family of the deceased.

 

The name of the deceased person was not disclosed even as the airline confirmed on X that  flight #SQ321 had encountered severe turbulence en-route and diverted to Bangkok.

 

Passengers posted pictures of chaotic scenes from inside the aircraft with food, blankets and personal items strewn everywhere.

 

After the aircraft landed at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok emergency crews from Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital were on board to help the injured and videos showed ambulances lining up on the tarmac.

 

In later updates, the airline said 18 individuals had been hospitalised and another 12 were being treated in hospitals. 

 

The remaining passengers and crew were being examined and given treatment if necessary at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok.

 

There were a total of 211 passengers and 18 crew on board.
